Shawano County

County Seat:
Shawano
WCA District:
North Central
With only a 44% Covid 19 vaccination rate, this county is has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Wisconsin.
During the Covid 19 pandemic, hospitals in this general region were filled beyond capacity by extremely sick, un-vaccinated patients from Shawano County. Routine health care often had to be suspended due to the crushing demand caused by un-vaccinated residents with Covid 19 taking hospital beds away from victims of strokes, heart attacks, and car crashes on several occasions during the pandemic.
During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Republican Sheriff in this county took a public position of refusing to enforce Wisconsin state health department mandates requiring residents to wear masks in restaurants and bars. Note the Covid-19 vaccination rate in this county.

This school district is located in Shawano County. By a strong majority, the residents of this county are strong Trump supporters, and spent 2012-2018 Standing With Walker  to denigrate public school teachers at every opportunity. Not surprisingly, public education in this county suffers from a lack of support from the many county residents who are strong MAGA supporters.

Nearly every yard in this county that has a sign proclaiming support for Trump and/or contempt for President Biden and those who support him. FJB signs are more prevalent than the American flag in most areas of Shawano County.  Woe to anyone living in this county, especially a public school teacher, that doesn't openly support Trump or who dares to openly support Biden or any Democratic candidate.

Like most predominantly MAGA supporting Wisconsin counties, teacher pay and benefits in this county are pretty low. Average teacher pay in this county ranges from $51,673 to $58,629.

Though by far the largest district in Shawano County, the Shawano school district average teacher salary was one of the lower ones in Shawano County at $55,358.  The increase in average teacher salary since 2011  was 14.1%, which was well below the rate of inflation.

We have heard that there has been a significant exodus of great teachers during the last few years due to a lot of turmoil at the upper levels of administration & school board. We have read about some pretty sketchy things (https://www.tchdailynews.com/2022/04/15/77819/ ) that this district has done to loyal teachers; especially the termination of a dedicated teacher and coach with 22 years of service who suffered a disabling stroke from the extreme stress and turmoil from how this district treated it's teachers during the past few years.

Still suffering from the disabling effects of the stroke, the district terminated him and cut off his health insurance days after he exhausted his sick leave. Many districts would have put him on disability leave, but not Shawano. Might want to consider that if you're considering accepting a position with this school district.

Even the Superintendent pay declined by 6.8% in this district, one of only a few districts in Wisconsin where this happened. We think that when the Superintendent pay declines, that the district is having severe financial issues.

Rating the career prospects for this district is not a tough call at all; we rank career employment potential as a Dead End job in this district.
